Gay Rights - The Definitive Response

Take Me To Post Comment Form

In a couple of weeks, voters in the state of Maine will go to the polls to determine whether or not they will repeal a measure passed by the legislature to allow gay people to marry.

I came across this video clip from a recent town hall type of gathering in Maine where they were discussing the issue.

I'm not usually prone to outbursts of emotion, and certainly not in reaction to news events. But for those of you with broadband access, and are in any way supportive of the concept of equality for gay people, take a look at this video clip around the 1:50 - 2 minute mark.

It is an 80+ year old World War II veteran and D-Day participant speaking in support of gay rights. He talks about an experience he had where someone asked him if he believed in equality for gays and lesbians.

He replied "what do you think we fought for on Omaha beach"

That simple, honest, moving response put a lump in my throat and really does say it all.

Even an 80 year old homosexual vet can get it wrong! When he was a driver in the war during that time you don't say what you are, you just do your job. Don't ask, don't tell is a good policy because it does keep everyone equal without putting your beliefs down the throats of others. It's called unit cohesion. That's how it was when I served. I knew plenty of soldiers who were gay, they just didn't say it. We all knew, but since they didn't say it, they were saved because no straight person wants to be sleeping next to someone who is homosexual, that's for sure. Homosexual marriage is too much and California got it right, we voted it OUT THE DOOR!

The man in the video never said anything about himself being gay personally.

Don't ask don't tell is an utterly ridiculous policy and it does not keep everyone equal. If straight people in the military are allowed to talk about their loved ones back home and put thier beliefs "down the throats of others", then gay people should have the same right. That is true equality.

Anyway, I am straight and you most certainly do not speak for me or for many other straight people that I know.

As far as unit cohesion, gays serve openly in the Israeli military. You might have heard of Israel. They have a level of military preparedness that is second to none. Israel along with almost all of our NATO allies allows gay people to serve openly.

My suspicion is that if the day ever comes when the majority of the population votes to deprive you of rights that are enjoyed by other citizens, you will change your mind about the wisdom of subjecting fundamental rights to a popular vote.

I will never understand why right wingers derive such pleasure in denying rights and priveleges to others.

I offer the following paraphrase attributed to Gavin Newsom, As Maine goes, so goes the nation." God Bless America!!! Gavin, Thanks for your withdrawl from the California gubernatorial race! It will be duly noted as a true public service. The rights and privileges, of which you speak, are in fact self denied.

dear god, you idiotic people. I'm guessing those who are opposed to gay rights on these blogs are middle aged people, with extreme conservative views, with a strong religious backing. I agree with anthony 002 why do you enjoy denying the natural rights you have that others dont? How despicable a person is that to sit there and pry into anothers presonal life. Would you be happy if you were told u cannot marry the one you love. This just goes back to plain simple logic, there will ALWAYS be something to fight for, and like womens rights, blacks right, it will soon be homosexual rights, the new generation will be nixing out such views that those opposers have. and finally we will have some peace in this "free" country. now dont pull your dont ask dont tell policy, its a load of crap, and needs to be tossed out the window. immeadiately. And before you write some, what you would think, is a witty and logical explanation with your "tact", take this into consideration. If you were told hey, im sorry but we decided you're no longer married to your wife, its now illegal, how would u feel? How would u feel if ur wife/husband died, and u had no rights to anything they owned. Its a lot more than the word marriage people, its time to grow up and rid of your disgusting prejudices u have.

Anyone Up for a Game of Cards?
November 20, 2009
Race cards that is. In the unending debate over who injects race into debates where race has nothing to do with the subject at hand, I think the best policy is to let words and deeds speak for themselves. My own opinion is that people who agreed with Rush Limbaugh ...

REAL Americans know the REAL Problem was ACORN

I am repeating myself a bit here. But this taxpayer funding hypocrisy really irks me. As one more illustration that the notion of a "liberal" mainstream media is entirely bogus, consider the current Blackwater story. It has been going on for months. Have we seen anywhere near the coverage of ...

I think this next story perfectly illustrates the problems with decision-making in our country when it comes to questions of war. To date, the war in Iraq has cost us hundreds of billions of dollars, over 30,000 dead and wounded Americans, and uncounted thousands of innocent Iraqis killed or wounded. ...

Do Any of You Guys Believe in the Constitution?

The Mayor, The Police Commissioner and the Constitution. No, that's not the beginning of some dumb joke about walking into a bar. It is a reminder to the noise machine currently blustering about the 9/11 trials that Attorney GeneralHolder announced will take place in New York. I don't know what ...

When We Win, We Win - When We lose, We Still Win
November 16, 2009
That pretty much sums up the spin from the right on last night's election results. No matter the outcome. Even if the guy they supported, received fewer votes, they won. Let me make it real simple. If Republican Tom Campbell happens to be California's next governor, his vote total will ...
