Once again I have to take issue with Chuck Roots' take in his article (All about respect & why I'm turning out the N*FL) 10/25. Like a lot of folks, (Pronounce that White), Roots doesn't seem to have a clue as to why mostly non-white football players have chosen to take a knee or standing while locking arms in unity in protest during the playing of the National Anthem before the start of Football Games in the N*FL. Roots believes they are protesting the flag or the military or the war of 1812. Yes, he brought that up.

What he didn't bother to mention was how this protest, that started out with just a couple of players a year ago, to the majority of players today and which "Great Patriot" was the main catalyst in making it what it is today. Yes, I am talking about Donald Trump who is such a patriot, he took five deferments to get out of serving his country. You may have heard a true hero and patriot bring that up just the other day, Sen. John McCain. Whom, I might add, Trump called a non-hero because he was captured. Thousands of soldiers have been captured, apparently none of them can be called hero's. McCain brought up the deferments Trump took, which included bone-spurs in Trumps feet. Never mind that Trump went on to play sports in College. Apparently the sports he played didn't include using his feet.

Trump brought all this on during a political rally with his base where he called any player protesting (There were just a couple at the time), SOBs and should be thrown out of the game never to return. This of course, was Trump once again throwing out red meat to his base who loves this kind of divisive rhetoric, something Trump is extremely good at, unlike lying, he is extremely bad at that although he lies at least five times a day (True stat).

Roots, cites the N*FL operations manual where it states players "Should" stand, etc... during the National Anthem, "Should" not "Must" and at the N*FL owners meeting where this was discussed in detail, owners agreed they would leave it up to the players. Including the owner of "Americas Team" the Dallas Cowboys. So much for that... Next Roots brings up the soldiers who died for our freedom to honor the flag. Wrong again, they died for our freedom to make that choice or peacefully protest where we want and how we want. It's called the 1st amendment. Roots should read that one sometime while he is reading the 2nd amendment which he loves so much. Apparently Roots thinks that because he is a veteran, all veterans think like he does. Well, I too am a veteran and I beg to differ...He isn't the only veteran who has seen soldiers die in battle and he won't be the last. After my initial military hitch and having secured a TS clearance, I took a job with the Army, raised my clearance to TS Crypto where it was one of my jobs to be the first one notified of a Vietnam casualty in my region. I got lots of those. If Roots were not white, he would surely understand the real reason for the start of this protest last year. I don't understand why he fails to understand this, there are many white folks who do understand with no problem. I would be willing to bet the majority are not Trump supporters.

Roots goes on to explain how it is the fans who subsidize the N*FL, really Roots? We didn't know that. I did some quick research on that claim and to my surprise, found that fans actually subsidize every major sport and every minor sport, including the HS football games that Roots now claims he will turn to. I assume we are supposed to believe Roots has always been a big N*FL fan but now he has decided to turn to HS football exclusively. Yeah, right... Wonder why he didn't even bother to mention his favorite N*FL team. I did notice Roots didn't mention Jesus in his article either like is his usual M.O , strange because everyone knows N*FL players almost always point to the sky to acknowledge some apparently higher power up there after scoring a TD.
Roots may be happy watching HS ball but as for me, I'll try to be at the Raider game, or I will be in front of the TV every Sunday, Monday and Thursday or watching the N*FL channel catching up on game highlights I might have missed. During the National Anthem, I will probably be getting a beer or some guacamole for my chips like just about every other N*FL fan watching from home.

Hi Larry,
I'm glad you wrote a response to Roots' column. I was tempted to write one myself, but had already wrote a rebuttal to Frank Aquila's letter which had many of the same points as Roots. The thing that I find most troubling is that Roots gave years of service to the military (very commendable) but seems not to understand what he was truly fighting for and representing. The flag is a symbol, but unless we defend the ideals the flag actually symbolizes, it is just a piece of cloth. We are not a fascist county where we have to blindly bow to our leadership or reflexively salute our flag. We choose to honor our flag and all those who served our country and its ideals. But the real patriot is one who acknowledges our nation's flaws and tries to come up with solutions to make it better. Again, thanks for the rebuttal. Sincerely, Karen

Thanks Karen, very well said... as usual...

I'm sure you seen Franks Hillary-did-it rant today. Talk about irony, his rant appears on the same day that Mueller reveals his first GUILTY plea on the Trump-Russia probe plus hands out two 12 count indictments to two more Trump Campaign officials... amazing timing on Frank's part....

Hi Larry,
Yes, I did read Aquila's letter. The whole time I was just shaking my head and providing a running rebuttal (my poor husband had to listen to my disgust) to Aquila's rant. I use the word "rant" because he makes baseless allegations against Hillary with no substantiated claims, only conspiracy theories and a double standard. For example, How can Trump claim (and Aquila, by extension), that Hillary's campaign's and the DNC's actions were so outrageous in funding the opposition research that was first bankrolled by Republicans or conservative groups during the primaries, but somehow Don Jr.'s meeting with Russian representatives to "get dirt" on Hillary was just fine, nothing to see, just move along now? That just smacks of hypocrisy to me. It will be interesting to see what further things come out of Mueller's investigation. I've no doubt that Trump will try to distract or cry "fake news! and " "biased media!" in his childish, unbalanced twitter tantrums. Sincerely, Karen

Hey Larry, the news today is showing that Hillary took over the DNC. If I remember correctly, and I do, I told you the DNC was rigging the primaries. We could have had Bernie instead of President Little Hands.

I like the stuff you have been posting of late, but I just wanted to point that out just for the record.

Sov, Yeah, I seen that.... too little too late, I'd say... unless Pence pulls out the 25th. I am afraid we are stuck with the Tweeter Tweaker for awhile. Don't know that Pence would be much better anyway...

karen, Couldn't take it anymore, had to send a letter off on Franks rant last night... Probably won't make print since I just sent something a few days ago although I have seen Frank's letters almost back to back... that's ok, I will post it here anyway... :-)

We do have an election coming up and if the Democrats without the help of the DNC are able to utilize the war chest that they have amassed, can turn the Congress and contain “Little Hands” with a slow drawn out impeachment trial.

Also, except for a handful of people, does anyone really read the MB? It’s like the FoxNews of the valley, right wing BS with a little news thrown in.

LarryBaca commented on Saturday, Nov 04, 2017 at 22:05 PM

If the Dems can turn Congress, that would be the ticket but I won't hold my breath...

TheSovereign commented on Sunday, Nov 05, 2017 at 08:54 AM

It’s not insurmountable, but it will mean standing up for an ideal, which they haven’t had in a long while. We thought Obama had those ideals based on his campaign rhetoric, but it proved to be just that, rhetoric. One can sing his praises for stabilizing the economy after the prior administration, but he missed so many opportunities to improve the lives of the masses that voted for him.

Then came HRC, who only represented the winners of Obama’s efforts, which is why so many Blue Collar voters went to the right, obviously to their own demise. If, and I say IF, the Democrats can find their foundation rooted in FDR, they will be able to make a comeback. They aren’t going anywhere with the current head of the DNC, still too rooted in the money changers.

Fighting with dolts like Frank isn’t going to in*fluence anyone. The people who move here from the Bay Area aren’t paying attention to what Frank or any other right wing fringe has to say, which is why we had McNerney until they redrew the boundaries. Those who vote for the right in the valley are some of the lowest educated in the country, let alone the state. You aren’t going to change their minds until they suffer an economic downturn. Their benefit is they live in this sanctuary state that protects the right wingers from the economic destruction that other right wingers experienced in Conservative wet dreams like Kansas.

You are better off talking to Liberals and Independents as to what we need to be doing instead of deflecting the BS from the Fringe.

Based on the results from yesterday's elections, I believe there is an once of credibility to what I stated here.

BTW, the West Coast is now truly the Left Coast with the new governor of Washington joining the governorship of Oregon and California in turning away the GOP.

I was taught a while back by a wise man that you can only beat a dog so long before it will turn on you.
