My Experience in the Grand Canyon: Rim To Rim

Take Me To Post Comment Form

"In the Grand Canyon, Arizona has a natural wonder which is in kind absolutely unparalleled throughout the rest of the world. I want to ask you to keep this great wonder of nature as it now is. I hope you will not have a building of any kind, not a summer cottage, a hotel or anything else, to mar the wonderful grandeur, the sublimity, the great loneliness and beauty of the canyon. Leave it as it is. You cannot improve on it. The ages have been at work on it, and man can only mar it." -Theodore Roosevelt

President Roosevelt basically sums up the beauty of the Grand Canyon with the above quote but to really understand what he means you need to experience it for yourself. That’s why my friends and I grabbed our gear and did a tour of the Grand Canyon Rim to Rim. We wanted to see it all and we did!

Here’s what my hiking buddy had to say about it:

“The North Kaibab trail is where we began our decent down vast layers of rock and history. The geology alone is an absolute marvel. The difficulty of going from one side of the canyon to the other was intense. But the company, weather, and views like this were pretty good at keeping us smiling the whole way.” - Randy

A breakdown of our journey:

On the first day we started at the trail head at the North Rim of Grand Canyon. We then made the 7 mile trek to Cottonwood Campground where we had the opportunity to rest and splash in Bright Angel Creek to cool our heels.

On Day two we headed out to Bright Angel Camp but stopped along the way at the beautiful Ribbon Falls.

Day three was a hike along Bright Angel trail marked with views of the Colorado River and inner canyon.

The last day we made the 3,000 foot climb up to the South Rim of the Canyon. After days of hiking, the elevation change was noticeable not only by the changing terrain but also on our feet. Great hiking shoes and socks proved their worth on this last leg of the trek!

Once out of the Canyon we had some grub to replenish our energy before our drive back to civilization.

As my buddy Randy said, the hike is intense. This is not a walk in the park -- The Grand Canyon is called “Grand” for a reason. But, if you make it down and back out again, it will be a trip of a lifetime.

The inner part of the Canyon looks completely different from the dusty trail we started on. The red rocks and lush green are awe-inspiring and if those views weren’t impressive enough, we had a natural light show we enjoyed each night.

While on this tour of the Grand Canyon there wasn’t a moment where we were not surrounded or astounded by the beauty and power of Mother Nature. While the hike was a bear, we made it out with more appreciation for the Canyon we live so close to and for our legs for carrying us on our adventure.

Here’s a quick list of “must haves” for your trek:

• Sunscreen
• Hydration Bladder
• Very good hiking shoes and socks
• Aqua shoes
• Flashlight/headlamp
• Bug Spray
• A hat
• Sunglasses
• Bandana (not sure why but this ALWAYS comes in handy)

So if you’re physically fit and ready for an adventure through one of the wonders of the world, hike the Grand Canyon Rim to Rim. You will never forget it.
