Those lazy, hazy, crazy days of summer are here, and it is time for congress to recess. And when they recess they do what? That's right, they hold townhall meetings with the constituents that live in the district that they represent. Oh joyous times, we as citizens now get to be heard.

So what kind of reception do you think the congressman and congresswomen are in for, since after all, they are members of the lowest rated congress of all time with a 12% approval rating. This, and the last congress are the two lowest rated congresses of all time, and the best they can point to, is that they voted to rescind the much needed reforms and regulations to the health insurance industry, a multitude of times… with no success.

The American people are concerned with the economy, and the best this congress can do is the sequester. So, now they are claiming that the sequester is doing harm to their districts. Really? Its only 10% of the budget. What kind of damage do they think their governmental operation cuts are going to do? Even the administration is rolling out the Secretary of Defense to tell us how the sequestration is damaging our military readiness. Really??? 10%… That is all that is cut from their budget, 10 cents of every dollar, they still have 90 cents to spend. Every department in the National Government will have 90 cents of every dollar of their budget to spend, across the board. Seems fair to me. A measly 10% can be found in waste. By simply cutting the low hanging fruit of waste and the 10% can be addressed without all of the drama that this congress feels compelled to deliver.

Did anyone notice that we are in the process of ending TWO WARS??? When that happens, you reduce military spending down to peace time levels!!! Not cry that the over in*flated $700 billion dollar military budget is going to have $70 billion removed due to the sequestration, pretending that it is leaving them unable to be effectively ready to go to war. What it does, is leave them a bigger budget than they had before 2001. So they should really be explaining the plan to return to a peace time military with the drastic savings from not spending on weapons and soldiers for war. We can now return those dollars being spent on war, to the people, to do as they see fit with it. Right? Thats how its supposed to work, why is it different now? There has been no war declared in 70 years, so, it should be no big deal to ratchet spending down to peace time, the way I see it.

So, now they are coming home to meet the constitutes, and how does the Republican Party plan to explain such a dismal record of legislature, with little if any action on the economy,or anything else for that matter? Their plan is to sell you on the idea that they have been fighting Washington! I guess they believe you are so stupid to not realize that they ARE Washington. They were the Washington that got us in this mess, and they are the Washington that is fighting to keep from changing those failed policies that were passed when they were running Washington. I have heard that Conservatism is a mental disorder, and it is starting to look like it is schizophrenia with this plan. "They have been fighting Washington…" NO, they have been fighting IN Washington. Why does my intelligence need to be constantly insulted by this congress, and those whose responsibility it is to develop the talking points? They are at an approval rating of 12%! When do they get it????

When do we get it?

Well, at least once the summer is over, we can look forward to the Republicans holding the debt limit hostage again, our economy tanking, and knowing that this is what represents us.

May I make a suggestion, and the Republicans in charge of the house take their own concept, and out-source the next budget to competent experts in the field of economics, such as professors in economics as an example, and have a number of different budgets presented to them, and then they can just vote on the one they like best. After all, none of them are competent enough to develop a working budget. They are lawyers by trade. What do they know about making anything work? All they have been trained to do is argue, and try different tactics on each other to get the all elusive "gotcha moment." Except for the failed speaker of the two least productive, and lowest approved House of Representatives of all time, John Boehner, he owned a bar. Can't you tell…

You get the government you deserve.

Sov your "This is what represents YOU! And you picked them!" statement is so true

And here we have the "Shut down"!

The little tid bit of "Although much of the federal workforce will go without pay, checks will keep coming to the 533 current members of Congress."
Why? The 27th Amendment prevents any Congress from changing its own pay.
This makes it easier to shut down they're not worried about their own paychecks ,that needs to be addressed .
No budget ,no paycheck!

Is there an issue that Congress doesn't itself want to use Obamacare ? Anyone have an answer on that, because I do believe that the Whole of Congress should have to use what everyone else will be using.I think the days of entitlement should be over and Congress should have to participate in the new health care.
Is it a fact or rumor that Congress is exempt from the new health care ?

We continually hear the mantra of fire everyone and start fresh. Unfortunately, when it becomes time to vote, those very same people state tat their elected representatives are just fine, it is everyone else's that need to go. Hence we end up with the same bad apples making all the wrong decisions election after election. This will never change until we actually have a valid three, four, or more party system. That's not likely to happen anytime soon, at least not in my lifetime. Just my humble opinion.

LarryBaca commented on Friday, Oct 18, 2013 at 18:52 PM

Roze, Congress is exempt from the new health care because like all other employees of any employer who provides coverage, they already have coverage provided (in part) by their employer, the US Government. Just like every other Government employee or Postal employee or retired employee.

rozemist commented on Friday, Oct 18, 2013 at 21:36 PM

Thanks Larry for explaining it wasn't a rumor
Can't say I'm happy they remain "entitled " but what the heck it is what it is

@ramrod, I have long felt we are stuck with this 2 party system that is a failure what just happened the last few weeks is more proof of that
Yes we desperately need a 3rd even 4th, we need choices
Like you I doubt this will happen in my lifetime

It is more and more obvious that a new political party of the left needs to be created around a program of working class fight back. The political spectrum keeps moving farther and farther right as the political situation becomes more precarious even though poll after poll shows the opinions keep going in the opposite direction, towards the left while getting little to no policy recognition in the government. OWS showed us these ideas are out there, that they are supported by large parts of the population(more popular than the Tea Party is right now) but we're not organized. Democrats have shown to be woefully inadequate when it comes to even defending progressive goals and aims that have already been reached let alone having progressive policies enacted. Obamacare has been his greatest achievement which is just sad, especially given the setup they were given by Republicans when Obama first got elected.

If people want it we're going to have to fight and create our own independent political parties not beholden to the corporate leaders in the other two parties they represent.

"Unfortunately, when it becomes time to vote, those very same people state tat their elected representatives are just fine, it is everyone else's that need to go. "

Says the guy who probably voted to re-elect Jeff Denham ...

Sad that hypocrisy is so rampant in conservative politics.

We do get the government we deserve
So true Sov
I hope we get it right this time around
would be nice to start with a clean slate new president, new congress ,
as disappointed as I am with president I can't say that I'm any happier with Congress. Congress has set back and said they're going to do this an not going to do that and they've done nothing.
All these career politicians,it's always the same.

Two years later and we are about to see the same story play out once again. The Republicans are about to hold the government hostage again. Americans have seen the same plays over and over again like clock work, and they don't question anymore who is at fault for shutting it down, the Republicans.

Its amazing how they have turned our congress into a reality TV show with all the made up drama to go along with it. As I have said many times and many ways, nothing will change until we change the money in the election system. Corruption is too easy to come by in the current system with too little oversight, and too much money being passed around. There are simple solutions, but until the citizens unite in forcing a change, nothing will change.

Good to re-read these blogs and the comments 2 years later and see who was relevant and who was just disagreeable.

crimeriddendump commented on Wednesday, Sep 09, 2015 at 05:31 AM

The political equivalent of a child threatening to hold his breath until he gets his way.

Also, I'm not sure how people like Cruz, Huckabee, and Sean Hannitty feel they can call themselves "Constitutional Conservatives" when they have recently been suggesting people actively ignore the Constitution and any other law if one feels it is against their superstitions.

TheSovereign commented on Wednesday, Sep 09, 2015 at 23:50 PM

So, lets take Mr Huckabee's advice and ignore the part that states "or prohibiting the free excercise thereof;" and then re-evaluate what he is promoting.

They have every right to have a belief in anything that satisfies their inner need, but they do not have the right to infringe on mine or anyone else's right to enjoy our Constitutional rights to their fullest.

There are just too many special interest groups out there on all sides of the spectrum to believe that only two parties is sufficient to represent them all. Someone is always trying to consolidate power with a group with a similar belief or goal, and the Republicans did so with the Evangelicals and the Capitalist Conservatives, two groups who believe their way is the only way. So, now they are struggling for power, and the Mad Hatter ran off with the show.

All I can say is, this is shaping up to be one of the most entertaining and unexpected election campaign preseason that we've seen in a long time, and it's no where close to being over. It's amazing how the right continue to create fiction and expect the average American to believe them. What is even more amazing is that there are those who actually agree with, and even believe what these candidates are saying. No truth or reality to be found, just reality TV-like drama for attention.

This isn't to say the left is going to have a free ride, the progressive branch is waking up, and it looks like the youth is moving that way. Hilary is just a semi-moderate Capitalist who now, unexpectedly hasto move further to the left than she planned. Bernie is doing a good job on the populist progressive front, and O'Malloy is just firing up. Should be interesting on how Fox News handles the Democrats. Will they try and drive a wedge by siding with one of them? Clinton sides with money, and it is looking like her party is moving away from the monied.

I hope it is becoming obvious to anyone who read these blogs two years ago, that there is a Consevative play book, and the GOP is repeating plays. Intentionally shutting down the government is treasonous and should be treated as such. Our Republic is based on laws, and our democracy means the people create the laws, not parties or special interests. There is a process, and new ideas have a forum, but radical ideas do not last long, and are not typically completely thought out., or good for the country as a whole.

The president has shown a more aggressive side of late, it will be interesting to see if he can out fox the GOP again with this looming government shutdown. I'm just going to sit back and watch, this stuff only happens so often and I want to be able to tell my grandchildren.

Like so many in Manteca, Huckabee uses Christianity to justify bigotry. If he doesn't believe in the Supreme Court and therefore the whole of the Constitution's Article III, he is not a "constitutional conservative" but a zealot / religious extremist / bigot.

TheSovereign commented on Friday, Sep 11, 2015 at 09:29 AM

Yes, and it is obvious that he is not Presidential material. He only has knowledge of, and only defends one small segment of the Constitution which is not enough to qualify as one who is to preside over, and defend the whole Constitution.

The country as a whole have no interest in instituting any Sharia-Christian laws since it goes against the principles of Liberty and Freedom that this country is founded on. Which is why this guy's chances of receiving the nomination, or even inf*luencing the platform are very slim. He represents a small, and very vocal special interest group of controlling people, and nothing more.

The people about town that you mentioned are just followers, "trail horses" whom you can never get off the path they have been on for all these years, and lead them in a new direction. They don't reason for themselves, they are told what to think and what to believe, and it appears by recent examples elsewhere in the country, that they follow blindly.

crimeriddendump commented on Saturday, Sep 12, 2015 at 07:56 AM

I disagree with your "trail horses" comment to some regard. A trail horse blindly follows whereas a majority of these people see themselves as above the rules and special. That these people - like Huckabee - feel that black people and other minorities are sub-human, that Dred Scott still applies, that the Confederates never lost the civil war, and the United States was founded by Jesus Christ himself, riding on a dinosaur, with the sole purpose of fostering this great american that believes all this garbage at this moment, right now! Why else are there almost 20 people running for President from the GOP? Its a party of self-righteous narcissistic hypocrites so its par for the course.

TheSovereign commented on Saturday, Sep 12, 2015 at 15:53 PM

You refered to the local wing nuts, to which I made my trail horse reference, I don't disagree with your description of Huckabee, but other than to highlight the extreme in the GOP, I don't see him getting traction of any kind.

I seen where 10% of the population still believes the earth is flat, there are going to be Huckabees and Huckabee followers, but they will never amount to much.

Americans are always willing to give the benefit of doubt to people who wish to express their faith, but they do catch on after a while and turn in a different direction. It all comes down to a bunch of wing nuts who believe a fable to be true, and want everyone to live by the fable, and they get to tell us how to live and be controlled while they do as they please.

Americans are catching on to the ridiculousness of the right, and shutting down the government is not going to help the GOP's cause in any way.

crimeriddendump commented on Saturday, Sep 12, 2015 at 19:07 PM

Following christian faith would be admirable if people actually did it. Instead, they hate - something the Bible never accepted. Hate of homosexuals, hate of muslims, and xenophobia wrapped around a blanket of greed. All, ironically, qualities that Jesus preached against.

I do find it hypocritical how the same people that protest so violently against women's health care are the first in line to call children of dark skinned immigrants "anchor babies."
It would seem the more someone claims to be a christian, the less christian they seem to actually be in the end.

Again, these are the same people who claim now to have the god given authority to unilaterally decide what laws are ok and what laws are not and are suggesting armed insurrection if the long arm of the law reaches them in any way.

How is this all not treason? It is starting to sound allot like treason.

TheSovereign commented on Saturday, Sep 12, 2015 at 21:03 PM

It does sound like treason, and the expectation is that it will be nipped in the bud rather quickly.

These aren't how all Christians act, but you don't see Christians correcting the extremism that is being passed off as mainst*ream Christianity. Christianity seems to have little to do with Jesus' teachings and everything to do with control and power. The two things that he preached against.

It sounds an awful a lot like these are followers of the Anti-Christ, and not Jesus. It talks about these people in the bible.

crimeriddendump commented on Sunday, Sep 13, 2015 at 10:21 AM

I agree. The irony is amazing at it is quite visible every day in Manteca's huge churches and the community here celebrates rather than condemns it. Especially, the "churches" (errr tax shelters) where 100% of the pastors (errr tax evaders) have been arrested on acts of violence.

TheSovereign commented on Sunday, Sep 13, 2015 at 20:39 PM

"Since I am a pastor of a southern Baptist church please allow me to weigh in on the case of Kim Davis, the lady in Kentucky who refuses to issue a marriage licenses to a same sex couple.

First: This is not a case of the government forcing anyone to violate their religious belief. She is free to quit her job. If she quits her job to honor God surely God would take care of her."

This is from an open letter a Pastor has written to Ms. Davis. It's an interesting read, and it supports my statement that good Christians would take a stand against such self serving extremism.

I was also alluding to church CEO Dillman that was arrested for aggravated assault against a Sheriff deputy and COO Cox that was arrested on murder charges. Sounds more like the mafia than a place of faith and worship.
