As is the case with most bills to pass Congress these days, there were give aways and hand outs in order to get votes. Thats how our Congress works, they can't just fix something that needs attention, they have to horse trade and manipulate the process in order to tend to promises they have made to sponsors. Our tax dollars at work!
So, one of the give aways that caught my eye was a measures to advert what some called the "dairy cliff" which was the ending of subsidies that would have reverted milk subsidies back to 1949 levels. This would have caused prices for a gallon of milk to rise by nearly $3.50 a gallon, which would nearly double the price of a gallon of milk to $7.00. Now, on the face of it, it looks like Congress has done the consumer a favor by keeping the cost of milk down, and they are helping to keep the local dairy farmer in business.
From recent articles that I have read, small dairy farmers have been going out of business for a couple of years now as they are being squeezed by the middleman who buys the milk from the farmers and sells it to the distributors. The farmers are being paid less than it costs to produce the milk, thus driving many small dairy farmers out of business.
So, if things have been that tight for the small dairy farmer, then in order to present the notion that this subsidy was needed to keep the cost down for the consumer, the subsidy must apply more logically further down the process. Basically building in a sizable profit margin without the in.fluence of delivering a better product that can compete in the open market. In reality then, milk should really cost $7.00 a gallon. If it did, it would be subject to market powers, and possibly lose market share to other un-subsidized, and less expensive fortified beverages available.
This is by nature socialist in that the government is using our tax dollars to ensure profitability and sustainability of a specific type of consumer good, as opposed to it succeeding or failing based on its ability to compete in the open market. We heard arguments from those on the right that it was wrong for the government to help the auto industry, so how does this differ? It doesn't, obviously, the dairy industry has a strong lobby on capital hill.
I would like to point out to those who have cried that our President, and/or the Democrats in Congress are Socialists, I would like to bring to your attention that just about all of the Republicans in the Senate and 87 Republicans in the House voted in favor of continuing a Socialist program.
Its all a game of getting the general public to be mislead in order for others to gain. Its only socialism when "they" do it. If we want a smaller Government, then quit subsidizing corporations and let the market decide who profits and who doesn't, and maybe a little more of saying what you mean or meaning what you say by those quick to call others socialist.
BTW, wouldn't this subsidy be considered increased spending on the part of congress, since Congress holds the purse strings and writes the laws? I think so, as is always the case.

Hypocrisy seem rampant in people who identify as conservatives. Frankly, I think they can't justify their position on many things without resorting to some form of hypocrisy.
There are obvious rampant failing on both sides of the isle. Well written. The problem is the people on each side seem oblivious to their short falls and cry foul about the other. The funny part is, THEY ARE 100% RIGHT.
*sigh* Government manipulating markets isn't socialism. Taxes, tariffs, subsidies, regulations, etc, are not what makes something socialist.

Speaking of reality, the left raised holy hell with the right when the House was hesitant to pass a pork laden bill that was supposed to be aid for the storm stricken northeast. The House finally passed the bill back on January 15th even though it was laden with garbage that had nothing to do with helping the storm stricken victims in New York, New Jersey, and Connecticut.
Ten days later, the Senate is sitting on its backside on the very same bill that liberals berated conservatives for failing to speedily pass.
Why is that, my learned friend? You condemn conservatives, yet give a pass to the liberals for the very same thing. Let's see what do they call that? Oh, right... hypocrisy!

Speaking of hypocrisy, seems you are now blaming the Senate for the House distorting the bill the Senate ALREAY PASSED into this current GOP farce. So it is the Democrats fault that they passed too liberal of a bill the first time I guess .. right?

Bull, the more you write, the less I see hope for Conservatives. It's not hypocrisy to expose conservatives for the terrorists that they are and avoid taking about Democrates, since I am not promoting Democratic causes.
Get over your sad self, and learn what hypocrisy is.

I knew you despise conservatives, probably because we threaten your utopian liberal perfection. I didn't think your hatred sunk to the level of labeling us terrorists. Perhaps you could provide an example, but since in is patently untrue, I doubt it.
I know what hypocrisy is. You, Hoffman, most liberals, some conservatives, and our present Commander in Chief are experts at it.
Hypocrisy is trying to pass a relief bill for needy Americans and filling it with pork for a new roof for the Smithsonian and fish hatcheries in Alaska.
Hypocrisy is ridiculing Mitt Romney for changing a campaign stop to a relief effort while our President flies around with a Republican Governor promising aid that has still not reached those in desperate need.
Hypocrisy is looking a woman in the eye and telling your head of FEMA to cut through the red tape to help her... and the help has still not arrived.
Hypocrisy is flying off to sunny Hawaii in Air Force One for a family vacation while thousands of the taxpayers who fund such trips are freezing in Manhattan because Barak Obama hasn't kept his promises.
Hypocrisy is promising answers from FEMA in fifteen minutes and not holding the President's administration responsible for doing their jobs.
Hypocrisy is blaming the prior administration for security lapses that occurred on this President's watch. If, as claimed, there were insufficient funds for proper security, then pull our diplomats out of countries where security is inadequate to guarantee their safety.
Hypocrisy is going after law abiding American gun owners with ridiculous restrictions and ignoring the real causes of firearms violence - the criminals and the mentally ill.
Hypocrisy is calling conservatives terrorists when there is absolutely no proof to validate such claims.
Get over yourself, and learn what the truth is.

I'll tell you what is hypocritical: A guy trying to lecture people on hypocrisy that has no idea what the word means! CLASSIC!!!
Maybe this is why Bull153 has such a MAJOR problem with hypocrisy: he has no idea what it is! The majority of his listing of "hypocrisy" are just simply things he does not agree politically with and not at all instances of hypocrisy.
- Not hypocrisy. Not even close. What does the Smithsonian have to do with being hypocritical about relief?
- Not hypocrisy. Especially since the CONGRESS and not the President are in-charge of dispersing funds.
- Not hypocrisy. Especially since it actually happened and FEMA red-tape was cut for Sandy victims.
- Not hypocrisy. Again, CONGRESS is in-charge of money. NOT THE PRESIDENT!

Really, Bull153 should probably try and understand what hypocrisy actually is before he goes around WRONGLY claiming everything under the sun he disagrees with is "hypocrisy."
