According to some US individuals, including the group State Department Watch, eight Arctic islands currently controlled by Russia, including Wrangel Island, are claimed by the United States. However, according to the United States Department of State no such claim exists.
The USSR/USA Maritime Boundary Treaty, which has yet to be approved by the Russian Duma, does not address the status of these islands nor the maritime boundaries associated with them.
In 2004 Wrangel Island and neighboring Herald Island, along with their surrounding waters, were added to UNESCO's World Heritage List
What is needed is research on both sides of this issue, simply put look up the History, look up the information .The above was a copy/paste of a one sided view.
There is much more to this then what you're saying I spent a good hour researching it.
If people are going to only look with eyes that are seeking secrets, and hidden agendas, then this is what they will find.
People need to look with better eyes then that.
Looking at the sum total of information, and facts to then reach a rational conclusion of what one has read.
Jumping to hysterical, conspiracy theories never serves any purpose ,such as comments that elude that Americans are being ruled by Russians,Islands have been invaded, etc, etc.
The Russians that are there now, have been there for years.
Wayne2008 to be quite honest I have read many of your blogs that are posted on other sites and you have the propensity to create blogs that do suggest there are hidden agenda's ,and conspiracy's around every corner.
And by the way this is not the conclusion reached by a Liberal, because I have no Political choice right now.I'm open to the truth for the truth's sake.
I refuse to be led by bits and pieces of information that is just thrown out there on a whim in such a manner as to manipulate .
Sincerely,rozemist
Upon looking up some stuff on Wrangel Island I found some pretty funny things. Apparently Obama needs to step up the fight against Russia over this island ,which has seemed to be under Russian control for almost a hundred years and is home to only four rangers(who are presumably Russian).
Rozemist,I pointed out that in this last transfer of American Islands American citizens were also handed over to Russian forces. How would you like to be handed over to Russia?
I know I wouldn't want to be forced to become a citizen of another nation.
LarryBaca, I am not feeling dumb. I didn't write all of the information because it was not necessary.
Capitalist, You made my point,Russian soldiers are occupying an American Island and you see nothing wrong with that. I see a lot wrong with that and President Obama needs to step up to the plate and go to bat for Americans on this one. Give us our islands back..NOW !
So, the only real question that can or should be asked here is, can Sarah Palin see these islands from her front porch?
Hello wayne2008
I'm not quite sure I understand why you believe the issue regarding these Islands is new,it's Old News but has been completely blown out of proportion (with the bizarre adding in of Russians controlling Americans against their will)
It's back on the forefront now because it fits into the opposing side's quest to discredit this President by blaming him and his administration for everything.
This is the only reason it is note worthy news again.
Do you realize this goes back to Bush's administration?
Knowing this I'm curious if you still see this in the same light?
President Bush himself had 8 years to (step up to the plate and go to bat for Americans)
A direct quote from you on what you said President Obama should be doing.
State Department Watch has confronted each administration about this issue,so why hasn't Alaska acted ,they never have, and if they or the US felt in anyway that American Citizens were being forcibly held don't you believe for one moment someone would have done something?
I told you if you see conspiracy's all around you then this is exactly the only thing you will see.
You and others are so determined on accusing Obama of anything that you fail to take in all the information ,all of the relevant facts, and are running with wild speculations.
Please try to do some research and you will find how long this issue has been around.
You can look up the 1990 U.S.-U.S.S.R. Maritime Boundary Agreement--signed by Secretary Of State James Baker
I'm unable to insert this link because the Bulletin finds certain letters in the link unacceptable,I tried to work around it but grew tired of it.

I agree that this is not only an Obama problem. It is just one of the many faults of Bush that has extended to be a fault of Obama now. Obama = Bush's 3rd term. I can't believe that people still argue on party lines and Dem v. Repub. Wake up! It's the new boss. Same as the old boss. Every move that Obama makes I can picture Bush making the same move, the only difference is the Lib's would scream and shout when Bush was doing it and thr Repubs whine and moan when Obama does it. WHACKED!
Wrong Bush - "You can look up the 1990 U.S.-U.S.S.R. Maritime Boundary Agreement--signed by Secretary Of State James Baker"
I know, its hard to separate the poor governing abilities of the Bush family from one another.
"Lib's would scream and shout when Bush was doing it and thr Repubs whine and moan when Obama does it" - Examples?????
How about Obama's admin authorizing the murder of an American citizen over sea's.
Guantanamo
meddeling in the Middle East
professing that he personally does not agree with same sex marriage.
Not expanding climate policy.
I mean I can really go on and on.
Sovereign
Wrong Bush ?
Yep Your right !
so extends even further back to the 1st Bush ,and then on through each administration .
Thanks for bringing this to my attention.
Yes you are right also in that it is very hard to distinguish their governing abilities
Sincerely,rozemist
I really don't see anything wrong with Russia controlling a few islands off of their coast(which has been a part of a wild life preserve for decades under Russia, their control is nothing new). In 1916 they were claimed by Russia and we did nothing about it then because we never claimed the islands in the first place. But hey, if you want to die for these uninhabited islands that were never claimed by our government then you can go do that.
Just more silliness from the Right, but what else do they have? Birth Control and Islands nobody cares about, that's it.
Why wasn't the Alaskan state government involved in this, seems to me it also their land and peoples forced to become Russians.
That's a lot of resources Obama and the RINO's just gave our soon to be renewed enemies.
We could have used those resources. I don't think Sarah Palin can see Russia from her house..apparently you didn't get the joke she told. It was humor. Get over it already..
The Alaskan Supreme Court ruled in 1994 that the islands were not part of Alaska...
I don't see any proof that anybody that used to be an American citizen is now going to be a Russian citizen. Our government has not claimed the islands, they have been under Russian control since 1916, if anybody lived on these islands they would most likely be Russian citizens already(But as I keep reading up on these islands they all seem to be uninhabited). They're Russia's, get over it.
The only joke in what Palin said about being able to see Russia from her house, is Palin herself... Nobody in their right mind believes she wasn't being as serious as a heart attack.
Enough paranoia about these Russian islands, nobody cares, nobody...
I'd rather let Russia have them anyways. They make it a wildlife preservation while you'd like to use them for their resources and to put military bases that close to Russia. You'd like them so you could hurt the environment more and to step up hostilities with Russia. Oh how noble of these American conservatives pounding the war drums!
Larry, the world isn't flat, so most ordinary Americans realize she was joking around. But then again maybe you just got the news that the world is not flat?
It was a joke, get over it already....]]]
If by 'ordinary', you mean Conservatives and by getting the news that the world isn't flat, you mean Conservatives think it is recent news, then you are probably correct. News and facts have a hard time penetrating the Conservative bubble.
And the only place Palins complete lack of geography was a joke, was on her and SNL. Maybe you should watch GAME CHANGE tonight. 9 pm, HBO. I read the book and the first reports indicate the film is even better.
(Palin thought Africa was a country, this is the leader Conservatives wanted, amazing...)
Palin says something stupid and it's a bad joke. The drug addict radio host says something stupid and it's a bad joke.
Since the conservatives keep saying stupid things, according to these examples, it appears that it makes them a...... Bad joke!
LarryBaca;
Let's not forget our estemed President once claimed there are 57 states. Anyone, even you, is capable of misspeaking.
But I think the difference is Palin seemed to "misspeak" constantly, which leads one to believe maybe she's not misspeaking, maybe she's just really uneducated. Kind of like how Newt has made it his virtue to be a hypocrite, Romney a opportunist, and Obama right-wing. How many times does he have to compromise everything before we start thinking maybe he's not as progressive as we thought?
There are two islands named Wrangel(l).
One is in Russian waters and the other is in the Alaskan Inside Passage adjacent to Canada. See the following sites for maps.
Alaska Wrangell: Google Southeast Alaska Map of Inside Passaage.
Russian Wrangel : Google Artic Ocean Map
44, you are correct, sometimes anyone can misspeak. Obama is not perfect but to compare his misspeaks to Palin's misspeaks is stretching it a bit. You could probably get away with a comparison of Palin and Bush II and that would be debatable but Palin and Obama? Not even close..
Did you watch "Game Change" on HBO? Did you catch the line about Palin not knowing N.Korea and S.Korea were two different countries?
Remember the consultants on this project were two of the people closest to Palin during the campaign.
The lady was simply severely lacking in several areas, period. Anyone thinking this lady could be Commander in Chief must be stuck deep within the Bubble, really, really deep...
Excuse me but Waynes original post said the inhabitants of Wrangell had been stripped of their citizenship. That is false. Now if he was talking about Wrangel in the Artic that is clearly Russian.
According to some US individuals, including the group State Department Watch, eight Arctic islands currently controlled by Russia, including Wrangel Island, are claimed by the United States. However, according to the United States Department of State[34] no such claim exists. The USSR/USA Maritime Boundary Treaty,[35] which has yet to be approved by the Russian Duma, does not specifically address the status of these islands nor the maritime boundaries associated with them.
On June 1, 1990, Secretary of State James Baker signed an executive agreement with Eduard Shevardnadze, the former U.S.S.R. foreign minister. It specified that even though the treaty had not been ratified, the U.S. and the U.S.S.R. agreed to abide by the terms of the treaty beginning June 15, 1990. According to State Department Watch, neither the public nor Congress were informed of this executive agreement during the period leading up to the ratification vote. [36] The Senate ratified the U.S.-U.S.S.R. Maritime Boundary Treaty in 1991, which was then signed by President George Bush.[37]
In 2004 Wrangel Island and neighboring Herald Island, along with their surrounding waters, were added to UNESCO's World Heritage List.
I dont know who the "some" people are and "State Department Watch" is some obscure organization.
The following is from State Department Watch:
The eight American Alaskan islands are five in the Arctic Ocean (Wrangell, Herald, Bennett, Jeannette, and Henrietta), and three in the Bering Sea (Copper Island, Sea Lion Rock, and Sea Otter Rock).
· ● The five in the Arctic Ocean were discovered by Americans in 1881. Famous adventurer John Muir and Revenue Marine (Coast Guard) Captain Calvin Leighton Hooper found Wrangell Island. Navy Lt. George Washington DeLong aboard USS Jeannette found Bennett, Jeannette, and Henrietta (the crew got gold medals from Congress).
The De Long Islands (are an uninhabited archipelago often included as part of the New Siberian Islands, lying north east of Novaya Sibir. This archipelago consists of Jeannette Island, Henrietta Island, Bennett Island, Vilkitsky Island and Zhokhov Island. These five islands have a total area of 228 km². At 75 km², Bennett (Bennetta in Russian) Island is the largest island. These islands lie around 77°N, are partially covered by glaciers, and rise to peaks. In 1996, the total area of these islands covered by ice caps and glaciers was 80.6 km².[1] This island group belongs to the Sakha (Yakutia) Republic administrative division of Russia.
Now if the claim these belong to the US because an American discovered them in 1881 is about as reasonable as saying America belong to Italy because Amerigo Vespucci was the first to discover America.
