To some, maybe on the surface, the letter appearing in the Views Section (To Occupy folks: Quit expecting a free ride) by Linda Silverman,http://www.mantecabulletin.com/section/37/article/29804/ may have sounded like it was well thought out but if one just applies a little bit of logic, the whole thing seems to fall apart.
The writer complains about the alleged $13 Million the Occupy Movement has cost in overtime costs for the police response. The writer claims the alleged monies could have been spent on better things, like "..feeding and housing the poor and hungry....or for more teachers and firefighters, libraries." And to lower the cost of education...". Ironically, one of the complaints of the Occupy Movement is exactly that, lower the cost of education.
The writer claims anyone with a basic knowledge of economics should understand this. Maybe the writer should explain how a city draws up it's budget because the way I understand it, things like Police Overtime is usually budgeted as exactly that, Police Overtime. Not Police Overtime/Feed and House the Poor/Library and Education Assistance. Does the writer actually believe if that Overtime had not been needed, the monies saved would then go to feed and house the poor or for Libraries and Education Assistance? I mean, Really?
Apparently the writer does not believe in Free Speech or the Right to Assembly. Wonder if the writer had those same opinions when the Tea Party held their protests? Does she think there was no Police Overtime spent then? The writer further complains about the wasted time, time better spent helping the poor and elderly, work in a soup kitchen, clean an elders home, mow the grass, paint, read to a child, etc.., therefore becoming more productive. All good things but I wonder how many of these things the writer has actually done herself? Now, I can't make all those claims, but I have helped elderly neighbors, mowing the grass, painting, even administering eye medication and dispensing other medications but I never worked in a soup kitchen or helped out with a Child's lunch at school but I have no problem paying a little more in taxes so that child does get a school lunch. Does the writer have such a problem, I wonder?
So I do applaud the apparent compassion the writer has on the poor and elderly. I wonder then what her reaction was to the remarks made by the latest "Front Runner" in the GOP Primary, Newt Gingrich. Just a couple of days ago, in a campaign speech in front of a Republican gathering, promoting his book and DVD sales, Gingrich said children who receive lunch assistance, those who cannot afford the regular school lunch prices, should work it off cleaning up, like mopping floors and cleaning toilets. The response from the crowd was, get this, applause and cheering. Awhile back he said children of those on welfare should be shipped off to Orphanages where they could learn how to work. After all, those on welfare are there because they are too lazy to work, right? He should have added that line this time as well, the Republican crowd would have probably broke into a "Wave".
The writers compassion and the compassion shown by the "Front Runner" and his Republican audience doesn't seem to jive with each other. Maybe Gingrich isn't the writers first choice, but if it is, it makes one wonder if what he said makes any difference to her at all and is she really is just blowing smoke. That's not being productive either, is it?

I really don't understand that criticism of the movement "look at all the money we have to pay to suppress your movement!" As if the protesters are asking for thousands of police to come and destroy their tent cities and bloody them up. But whenever there is something conservatives don't like we always here that it costs too much money even though they will write a blank check when it comes to what they want *cough* War *cough*.

You are correct that police overtime, refuse overtime, etc. is budgeted but I doubt that the cities foresaw the extreme amount of overtime they are encountering now. And, no the money if not spent on police overtime would not be earmarked for the things listed, but the extra money spent on overtime for all extra personnel needed to police, clean up, remove refuse, etc. at OWS sights has to come from somewhere. Funding in other areas may be affected. I don’t really think that Linda Silverman thought the money would be used for these things if not for the OWS….but then again, maybe she did. I didn’t see anything in her letter that said she didn’t believe in Free Speech or Right of Assembly. In fact, she was exercising HER Right to Free Speech by voicing her opinion. In my opinion, there is no comparison between the Tea Party Rallies and OWS Camps.

CN…..”As if the protesters are asking for thousands of police to come and destroy their tent cities and bloody them up.” It seems to me that is exactly what they want. It’s the only way to get it in the news. Heck, I might even support them if someone could tell me what their purpose is….what the camps are trying to accomplish….what needs to happen for them to be successful. Costing the cities millions of dollars for no clear purpose is disturbing to some.

Thanks, Larry…I read the article you suggested. It did little to clarify the movement for me…maybe you can help me to understand. Under the AIMS section, there was only one sentence that tried to define the goals, “According to Bloomberg Businessweek, protesters want more and better jobs, more equal distribution of income, bank reform, and a reduction of the in-fluence of corporations on politics.” I’m not sure they actually speak for the movement, but for the sake of discussion, we’ll assume they do.

More and Better Jobs: Okay…I think most of us would like a better paying job. While I understand the high unemployment issues, there are $10 an hour jobs out there. There was a time I worked 2…and 3 jobs to make ends meet through a tough time in my life. It wasn’t fun, in fact it sucked, but you do what you have to do. I didn’t feel like anybody owed me anything. As far as better jobs, are the protestors educated, trained, qualified for “better jobs”? I guess I’m just not understanding what they mean. I guess my questions would be….What do you mean by better jobs? What do you want to see happen to accomplish “more and better jobs”? Basically, what does the movement want?

More Equal Distribution of Income: What does this mean? How is it accomplished? I could speculate on what I THINK it means, but I may be wrong. Not all the “haves” don’t deserve it and not all the “have-nots” do.

Bank Reform: I think most people would support this, but few have ideas on what is needed and how to accomplish it. Does the movement have any ideas? What do they want to see happen?

Reduction of the In-fluence of Corporations on Politics: Again…a sound idea, but I think it’s fairly safe to say that every politician has had some sort of corporate backing. My question would be, again, what does the movement want?

In my opinion, since the movement doesn’t have clearly defined, measurable goals and ideas or plans for achieving those goals, I don’t see how it can succeed or any reason to support it. Without unified goals, it also leaves the movement’s motives more open to speculation and gives the “lunatic fringe” a better opening to define it…even though this may not be fair.

canative62 commented on Thursday, Dec 08, 2011 at 10:50 AM

Maybe the movement does not have defined goals because their goals are actuallyu to bring down capitalism and change to Socialism. OR maybe they just don't know what to do with all the energy that they have so they become disruptive.
ONE thing is certain they do not have the right to VIOLATE the rights of others.Occupyng a park by the very name tells evertyone that the OWS has the park and there is no room for anyone else.

In an effort to curb the spammers, certain word strings aren't allowed. You need to put a dash or an underline to make the word work, like in_fluence, for example.

Ron

justmy2sense commented on Friday, Dec 09, 2011 at 23:36 PM

I know how frustrating that can be. As Bull153 noticed, I had trouble with the word in-fluence in my post. I received the same message you received until I added the dashes each time the word appeared.

LarryBaca commented on Saturday, Dec 10, 2011 at 01:39 AM

Bull and sense, thanks. wish I would have saved my response somewhere, oh well, no biggie.
That sure is a weird rule, wonder why it even exists.

Bull153 commented on Saturday, Dec 10, 2011 at 03:47 AM

Larry...

Briefly stated, spammers tend to use the same words in all their posts, and it is only one method that can be effective in keeping spammers in check. By blocking certain repetative word or letter strings, it keeps the spammers from posting. I've run into it a few times here, it is a small price to pay if it keeps the 100 pages of spam garbage out.

Banning spammers and other unwanted posters works well, except for those who insist on violating the ban and posting under a telephone book's worth of inane aliases... oh well.

Ron

rozemist commented on Saturday, Dec 10, 2011 at 11:24 AM

Actually Bull it's Not keeping the Spammers from posting, the program has not been able to keep the spammers out of the forum .
The difficulty in posting a comment or creating a blog is of little concern, unless that difficulty is bypassed over and over again by Spammers who have No Difficulty posting anything.
This is when the Program proves its doing nothing it should be doing but creating headaches for real members who blog or comment,
while on the other hand Spammers have free reign .
When the program does exactly what it should be doing, then our difficulty will no longer be a nuisance, and a small price to pay when Spammers can No Longer Post.
Until then I think I will be a little annoyed that I have to go back over certain comments again and again to be able to find the offending letters, while hundreds of Spams get posted with out any effort on their part.
Sincerely,rozemist

Thanks for the info guys...
I have to agree with gento. I am not all with the banning of posters unless they use profanity, make physical threats or like gento sez, make libelous insinuations as gento alludes to.
I don't mind being called stupid or dumb or whatever, that is just that persons personal opinion but to make insinuations about someone being a pedophile is just not right. that's just my opinion...

Bull153 commented on Saturday, Dec 10, 2011 at 18:26 PM

@ LarryBaca...

We agree on the concept if not the specifics. The Bulletin does not take banning people lightly. From what I've seen it is a last resort after numerous warnings and removals. I don't condone anyone making accusations of pedophilia on another, but by the same token, if the individual complied with his ban, he wouldn't be subjected to such improper conduct.

I know the Bulletin warns people before banning them. I received two warnings for what I considered minor infractions in the past. I'm sure Frank will be cautioned as well. Last week I was accused as well by mantecaPDisajoke in the comments section. Since there has been nothing further, I think he was warned.

The sad fact is gentoo, AKA thad56, AKA many other names, made his bed and must now sleep in it. As you've said, you can't have it both ways - complaining about unkind treatment - while engaging in unkind treatment of others.

Gentoo…where was your outcry and outrage when a similar comment was posted about Bull153 on another article. HE has stated that he does not condone this. I didn’t see you jumping to his defense and screaming injustice. So, I guess by your own reasoning, your silence signifies you condoned this type of post. That is what you have said of others in regard to YOUR situation.

Larry…I am sorry that I did not get to read your response to my post, as I am honestly trying to understand the OWS movement and find other’s views interesting…and sometimes enlightening.

Gentoo....I’m going to TRY and make this my last post that acknowledges you exist, but after reading post after inane post that NEVER stays on topic, I get frustrated and find it hard not to comment. Even in your last post, you twist Bull153’s words…He did NOT say, “I don’t condone anyone making accusations”. He DID say, “I don't condone anyone making accusations of pedophilia on another,”. We can all read. As for the comments you quoted from the article you linked, it looks to me like a question and an opinion, but forum readers, if they choose to, can read the entire exchange for themselves.

I have watched several people TRY to ignore you, but you keep at them until they feel compelled to stand up for themselves. YOU and your vendetta against Bull153 singlehandedly ruins almost every discussion. Try ignoring the ones who bother you so much, do not use their names or mention them in your responses. You can still voice your opinions and give your views without the personal attacks. You’re not going to convince the whole forum to feel as you do, and even if you did…what then? We’re all entitled to voice our views here…until we give them reason to ban us. Even then, if we follow your example, we can keep coming back. Try ignoring…that’s what I intend to TRY to do.

Lastly, I find it extremely amusing that anyone who agrees with Bull153 or backs his views, you say IS Bull153. I can repeat that I am female, but you will believe what you want to believe. That’s quite a conspiracy theory you’ve dreamed up.

Bull153 commented on Monday, Dec 12, 2011 at 01:00 AM

@ Hoffman...

Good grief... Just when it's apparent you have reached the depths of being absolutely ridiculous, you manage to make the hole even deeper.

You might actually get someone to buy into your insanity if you would at least quote me properly. You conveniently left of 'of pedophilia' from my comment. That makes a huge difference. I've never said I don't condone people making accusations, you've made plenty and so have I. The issue is proof... my accusations, when made, are factual, while yours are full of hot air and misinformation.

For example, you are well known for being thad56, biased, try_thinking, and many others. That's a fact. I am me, and only me. I've never been anyone else, despite all your lame accusations. That's also a fact.

I asked a question and offered an opinion on the article you referenced. Nowhere is there an accusation. If I had said "The police must have piddled in your flowerpot by doing a sweep at your abode, that's why you object to the police's efforts." you might have a case. Even if I accept my comment as a suggestion, it is still an opinion and not an accusation. I appreciate you posting the link, that way people can see for themselves how ridiculous you really are.

I didn't attack anyone here, I simply made a factual comment to LarryBaca. But even if I had, there are far more posts where you toss the first piece of garbage. One example is in the same article where I first comment about the police sweep and you chime in with this stupidity: "LOL, I think Bull believes if he brown-noses enough that maybe he'll get one of the badge stickers and they'll let him turn the siren on in a car! How sad!!!" No, how really childish. At least the readers can see my whole comment regarding your charge of my 'accusation'. Once again your own words do you in, as they always do.

Team Bull - how clever. I like it, too bad it's only a one man team.

Ron

Bull153 commented on Monday, Dec 12, 2011 at 18:18 PM

@ Hoffman...

Congratulations on being the head cheerleader leader of the campaign of absolute and total stupidity. You are really one of a kind in spite of your numerous aliases...

My posts are not nonsense and I sleep fine. To your infantile mind I guess 10 PM PST is late, about three hours past YOUR bedtime. Everyone here knows these time stamps are based on Eastern time...

To use your own words, I didn't personally attack you, I only posted FACTS. Kindly show where my first post "Banning spammers and other unwanted posters works well, except for those who insist on violating the ban and posting under a telephone book's worth of inane aliases... oh well." or even the second "The sad fact is gentoo, AKA thad56, AKA many other names, made his bed and must now sleep in it. As you've said, you can't have it both ways - complaining about unkind treatment - while engaging in unkind treatment of others." is not factually correct. Do you deny registering and posting under thad56, try_thinking, biased, etc?

What I posted to Postone is far from a libelous assault. Read it again then read what constitutes libel.

You have yet to offer one shred of evidence I am a liar. I only have a terrible time with your false accusations and insults. Every time I pin you in a corner with your own lies and demand proof, you ignore it and rant on about what a terrible person / hypocrite / bigot / liar I am. If only one percent of what you accuse me of were true, the other regulars would be supporting your claims. So far all you are is a one man band playing rotten tunes.

You make such asinine accusations about my education and police career, but like everything else, you offer no proof, only your lies. There is no way you could know what you claim about me. So again I say, offer some proof or shut your face. We are all anxiously awaiting YOUR proof that I tell 'outright lies'.

I would opine that LarryBaca, along with the rest of us, is probably more tired of your antics, falsehoods, and silliness than anything else. I'm pretty sure he's seen enough of your rampant stupidity, Hoffman...
