Eat, drink, and be merry!
New Year’s is prime time for drunken driving, but no day should be.
When I was 16 on April 10, 1992, a drunken driver hit me head-on. He changed my life.
I remained in a coma for four months, was paralyzed, had broken and dislocated bones, and damaged my hearing capabilities. I was a patient in two hospitals for 7 months.
Therapy followed for 17 months. I relearned to walk, talk and live independently.
Daily activities can easily change, if not end, if hit by a drunken driver. I was a teenager, but an adult or infant could have been a victim. Be aware that any age can be hit by drunken drivers.
The California Highway Patrol and I are determined to stop them from driving and you should be.
Listen to a victim. If drinking, eat snacks and only one to two drinks at least an hour before driving is the limit. Get a ride from the designated driver or taxi if drinking heavily.
Take the keys away from your drunken friends. Drunkenness gives them overconfidence making them feel able to drive. Alcohol affects their abilities from making good decisions when driving.
Welcome the New Year by following my advice to avoid the woes and fines of drunken driving.
